HR-90 Half Rack | Gorila Fitness

Updated: Oct 26, 2023

The Gorila HR-90 has been the centerpiece to our home gym for the past 3 years. The purpose of a squat rack is to provide you with a safe space to conveniently lift weights, and that's exactly what this rack does and then some. The HR-90 is a very solid and sturdy squat rack option that takes up very little space in comparison to a power cage. The weight storage is a great touch and the vast amount of attachments for this rack brings a ton of versatility. Our experience with the Gorila HR-90 has been excellent, now let's specifically talk about the things I like and maybe dislike about this rack after 3 years of use.

The Gorila HR-90 Squat Stand is made from Canadian Sourced 2.5" x 2.5", 11 gauge steel! I understand it isn't the more common 3" rack, however there should be absolutely no concern in regards to your safety. Our rack has been powdercoat in a nice red finish to match the aesthetic of our gym, and over the past few years this powdercoat has been deemed very durable. The only issue we had was on a miss-rack after squats, the machined, steel weights collided with one of the uprights. Overall, this squat rack is very well built and offers some great features as well.

A few of the features that I specifically like about this unit is the westside hole spacing through the benching areas. Westside hole spacing provides a much more precise and convenient j-cup placement. With more holes along the upright, it's a great that they added reference marks along the uprights to help navigate all the j-cup positions. Along the back portion of the rack, we have our weight storage. This is an excellent idea for people that are struggling with securing your squat rack to the floor. Not everyone wants to drill into their floor and this is a great alternative. We have both the sandwich j-cups and the spotter arms which are both coated in HDPE plastic to protect your barbells and they both do their job well.

One drawback about this rack that actually led me into getting rid of it is the 2.5" upright size. There are definitely some pros and cons to having your own specific upright size... On one hand, if you buy a Gorila rack, that means you have to get all of your attachments from them as well. With that said, I think the unique upright size has turned a lot of heads away from Gorila Fitness. In terms of the actual functionality of the rack, I don't have anything to complain about.

We also have the Gorila Adjustable Lever Arms as well. This is an awesome attachment and I haven't seen a lot of information on the internet about it so I thought I'd share a few things I've noticed about the Lever Arms from Gorila Fitness. To keep it relatively short, the amount of versatility that this attachment provides is unmatched. There are an endless amount of movements that can be achieved by using this attachment. The two drawbacks in my eyes are the pricepoint and the fact that the arms aren't on a trolley system (most units at this pricepoint offer a trolley system). In all honesty, the arms only take me a minute total to move from position to position, but it's something to keep in mind.
